The Biggest Pitfall of Living Together
Last week on the Love & Marriage segment on Fox 8, one of the viewers asked me this question:
What is your opinion of moving in with someone? Do you think it is a good way to “test” the relationship before marriage?
If you are a couple that wants to live together before marriage, my opinion on cohabitation is this: Get educated and prepare for it before calling a moving company. Peparation for living together is no different than preparation for marriage. The problem is that most couples don’t do it! Whether you live together, get married, or do both, you need to hire a professional coach or counselor to help you put in place an operating system for communicating, a plan for division of labor, and a plan for handling finances. Most importantly, you and your mate need to realize that if you break up, it will feel very much like a divorce. Know that going into it!
