Opposites Attract, Except in Politics
This is the season when even the most harmonious of couples get into conflicts. Why? Because it’s election season. In particular, it’s a presidential election season.
I often get asked about what couples should do during election season if they have opposing political views. Rather than avoid the topic of politics completely, I think talking about politics give couples a great opportunity to flex their listening muscles. Listening is hard enough when two people agree, but listening to someone who is saying something you fundamentally disagree with is even harder. Remember, though, listening isnt’ listening unless you aren’t interrupting, yelling, name calling, or throwing sarcastic barbs.
So give this a try. If, however, you can’t refrain from any of the above communication blockers, suggest to your mate that you want to agree to disagree. Doing so is perfectly appropriate and good for your relationship. End the interaction being grateful that you and your mate have some differing opinions. Would you really want to live with someone who agrees with you on everything anyway?
