Kathy Dawson’s Role as a Coach
The best way to explain coaching is to explain what it is not. Coaching is not psychotherapy or counseling. Although feelings may be expressed during a coaching session, no psychoanalysis or therapy will be used in relation to the emotions being expressed. If you are already in marriage counseling or have tried it in the past, Kathy Dawson's coaching works as a great alternative or supplement to marriage counseling.
As your coach, Kathy Dawson's job is to work with you to construct a custom-designed plan to help you manage your marriage or relationship. Providing an alternative or supplement to marriage counseling, Kathy’s role as a coach is to teach you skills and motivate you to incorporate those skills into your daily life. By supplying you with new information, skills, and “homework,” Kathy will help you be accountable for the positive changes you decide to make in yourself and in your marriage or relationship.
Kathy has opened our eyes to so much and has provided us with tools to help us treat each other with dignity.- Meg and Brian
What you can expect in a coaching session:
- To create a relationship timeline from the day you and your partner met up to the present day. A relationship timeline is an invaluable tool to help you step back from your life with your mate and observe the big picture, which often reveals certain repetitive cycles or ups and downs.
- To create a vision for your marriage or relationship. Once you and your partner are able to objectively look at where you have been in your relationship, the next step is for you both to decide where you want to go.
- To create a “relationship pie.” Marriage and relationships are like a pie made up of six important pieces: communication, romance and fun, practical life (logistics of living including household, day-to-day issues), physical intimacy, finances, and spirituality. Using the scale from 1-10, you and your mate will work together to assess each piece of your pie and prioritize the pieces according to which needs the most immediate attention.
- Although you and your partner may have conflict in the finance or physical intimacy piece of your pie, it is the communication piece that must be running smoothly first before the rest of your pie can operate at its fullest potential. In coaching sessions, you will learn how to communicate in a way that makes you and your mate feel heard by one another. Once each of you feels heard by the other, you will learn, as a team, how to problem solve.
- Trust is one of the basic building blocks in any relationship. If the trust level between you and your partner is low, each of you will be asked to compile a “trust inventory,” a list of things you feel you need from each other to help rebuild the trust between you.
A lot of our life goals and dreams have come true and they may not have if you hadn't taken the time to help us realize the gift we have in each other.- Katie and Anthony
Individual Coaching
"There are a couple of situations when individual coaching may be very helpful. For example, if you are single and would like relationship coaching for a possible future relationship, you may want one-on-one coaching. Another example is when you and your partner may desire to receive individual coaching before beginning couples coaching. At these times, the trust between you and your mate may have lessened to the point where one or both of you feels safer to express your feelings in a private session first before participating in a couples session. Until the trust between you is rebuilt, this type of coaching is not uncommon, nor is it inappropriate.
Kathy, Cupid can't hold an arrow next to you! We were once told money can't buy you happiness; this was the best money ever spent and we are happier than ever.- Rose and Chuck
Phone Coaching
If a face-to-face coaching session is not feasible, you may opt for a phone coaching session and Skype session, which is offered as a ½ hour session or hour session. Although written material is not distributed during phone coaching, the same concepts and skills that are taught in person are also taught during a phone session.
If you are not able to schedule a face-to-face coaching session, the next best alternative is to schedule a Skype session. Simply send an e-mail or call with your Skype contact name and phone number and your session will easily be arranged. All the same skills and concepts that are taught in person are taught through Skype.
